I love painting outdoors, but not when it is cold!

It is beautiful in the winter. With leaves off the trees, the landscape opens up. Here is Colorado we are inspired by the brilliant blue skies in contrast with the evergreens and snow. The short days mean afternoon skies can be dramatic, with piercing sun and streaks of color. Guess it is time to journal in the car!

Watercolor pencils and pen-and-ink are ideal in a tight space.

The fewer supplies to juggle, the better, when doing art journaling from the car! Watercolor pencils are great for this purpose. Sketch major shapes, fill in colors, and make notes about time, date, place, and characteristics of the setting. When you get back to your home or studio, use water to blend colors and highlight important features. Sometimes I prefer to sketch in pen, then add watercolor later.
